"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age" [Titus 2:11-12]

by the grace of God, we know that we have been empowered to say NO to worldly desires and passions.. and by doing so, we can live self-controlled lives that are pleasing to God.. and indeed, we know that we will be able to say no to our desires of just slacking around, or watching youtube videos, or hanging around facebook..

but another question beckons - how do we rely on this aforementioned "grace" of God?? yes we know that it can empower and teach us how to say no to worldly desires, but where is it and how do we get it?? and i think we've often got used to associate "grace" with "pardon", and hence we're more likely to think the "grace" of God works by giving us grace (or leeway) to commit sins of worldly desires over and over again..

so what exactly is the "grace" mentioned here?? honestly, i don't know.. my best guess would be that it's liberating, in the sense that yes, we will try our very best to live our lives free of worldly passions.. but if we should fail, we would not be condemned; and through this grace, we are justified once again and we can boldly set foot on our renewed campaign against worldly passions once again..

but once again, i must say that i don't know what it means, so if anybody has a better explanation, please do let me know =D

Grace in general

Sin is separation from God - it is us turning away from God. Grace on the other hand is God's mercy in drawing us back into a relationship with him once again.

So grace is not simply about escaping punishment from our sins. It is really to let us enjoy a relationship with God once again which is the greatest delight and blessing.

Hence grace should not encourage us to sin. It's really God's mercy in letting us stop sinning (stop turning away from Him).

In this passage

"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men." -> this possibly refers to God's grace of salvation through Jesus
