I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. [John:15:5] I've heard this before in a message by Joshua Harris and in that sermon this verse is dissected and each part of it made even more clear.. "APART FROM ME YOU CAN DO NOTHING".. how often have we taken this verse seriously, and how often have we taken this verse as absolutely true?? it really doesn't say "apart from me you cannot do some things" or even "apart from me you cannot do most things", but rather "apart from me you can do NOTHING".. and that really made me realise the importance of living with God in mind.. it reminds me of the parable of Psalm 127:1 - "Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.".. it's really a reminder for all of us to live our lives IN CHRIST.. and to do that, we need to consciously and actively make our decisions with Christ in mind, and not for ourselves.. because afterall, whatever decision we make outside of Christ amounts to NOTHING at the end of the day..
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. [John 15:2] how frightening is it?? we are the branch, and every branch that bears no fruit He cuts off!! we often think of God being faithful, and forgiving.. but here it is written that God will cut us off if we do not bear fruits.. and what does "fruits" mean?? i think it certainly refers to people whom be bring to Christ.. but how about the other things that we do?? like encourage a brother or a sister, or to remind a fellow brother to rediscover the relationship with God.. does those count too?? i'd certainly like to think so.. if not, a lot of us need to be very afraid..
we can cross reference to the parable of the sower in Mark 4: As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” [Mark 4:4-8] The farmer sows the word. Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” [Mark 4:14-18] are we, often, like the seeds sown amongst thorns?? and remember, that's not a good thing!! let us: 1. HEAR the Word 2. ACCEPT it, and 3. PRODUCE fruits
